Ornamental kale is a plant that has been grown for its attractiveness & edible nature since at least 4,000 years ago. This species, ornamental ‘Peacock ’ kale, has extra curly leaves in bi-color combinations. This specific variety, ‘Yokohama Red’ has a red & green combination. As the temperature drops, the more the color differences intensify — even freezing temperatures. This variety grows to be about 7” tall; it’s a shorter kale. It thrives when planted in the ground, as well as a container garden. Works well as a border plant & as beautiful element to a salad! Usually bred for its attractiveness, it’s also edible with a general bitterness.
When bred for its beautiful look, it’s important to grow it for at least 2 years. Because it is harvested as an edible, which would be done as soon as it’s ready in the first year, blooms aren’t usually seen as they form in the second year. The name refers to the illusion of the flower it creates through the foliage & the color.
Color begins to be created once temperature drops at night to at least below 60 degrees F. Ideally, daily temperatures would be between 40 & 80 degrees F, but it will survive in freezing temperatures up to 5 degrees F. This explains how it is grown in every USDA Zone. As previously stated, colder temperatures will even intensify the color.
Organically rich soil (pH 6-7.5)
Can be propagated in 2 different ways; through seed & being transplanted from an already grown plant.
OUTSIDE: if you receive 1+ inch of water per week that will be adequate.
CONTAINER: moderate watering; mimic outdoor’s instruction
*Plants that don’t get enough water may grow leggy with brown/yellow leaves
**Plants getting watered too much will cause leaves to be soggy, which can also happen after frost. In any case, cut them off with a sharp tool.
