Succulents are plants that have thick, fleshy foliage & stems that store water. Most have deep or broad root systems that carry the water from the soil into the stems & foliage. They are drought tolerant, meaning they're able to thrive in landscapes & environments that have limited resources. While most people equate succulents exclusively with cacti, but the number of species & cultivars of succulents span several plant families. They have some of the most diverse forms, colors, & blooms.

Why are succulents such a popular plant? Here's a basic overview we will dive further into later.

  • Succulents are striking & aesthetically pleasing as part of their exotic nature.
  • They require little pruning or watering.
  • They are easy to transport from their native areas due to their virtually maintenance free nature.
  • Easy to contain; these plants can be planted in small pots & place almost anywhere. Depending on the variety, most will be take a considerable amount of time before having to be repotted & will keep the original shape of their attractive arrangement for a prolonged amount of time.
  • Some, like aloe, even have medicinal or alternative uses.
  • Succulents can be planted alone or among other plants. With that being said, when it comes to planting succulents amongst various plants, the minimal & basic maintenance most succulents possess make it easy to plant them with virtually any other plant.
  • Most pests are not attracted to succulents.

As previously stated, succulents are specialized plants that are remarkably adapted to harsh climates where water is scarce or comes sporadically. The thick stems & leaves that store water are a unique adaptation that allows the plant to survive in low moisture regions of the world. Succulents are often thought to be native only to arid regions, such as deserts, but they also belong in forest settings, high alpine regions, coasts, & dry tropical areas. There are both xerophytic succulents that thrive in dry areas & halophytic types that live in boggy saline soil. The xerophytic succulent are the best known form & widely available as house or garden plants.

While most types of succulents require warm temperatures, moderately dry, well-draining soil & sunlight, some can withstand cooler to almost freezing temperatures, even fending off frost damage. Occasionally, cold snaps will force a plant into dormancy, but well established plants will spring back when warm weather returns. It Is crucial to know if your succulent is a tropical or hardy variety in instances where your it is planted outdoors.
